How often should you service your aircon in Singapore?
Service an aircon every 3 to 4 months if it runs every night or for long hours, and at least every 6 months if it is used lightly. Singapore's humidity keeps the evaporator coil wet, so dust turns to slime quickly. Road dust, cooking and pets shorten the interval; a chemical wash is needed only when servicing falls behind.
Key takeaways
- Nightly use means every 3 to 4 months: that is Uncle Eric's guide for most Singapore bedroom aircons.
- Light use means every 6 months: twice a year is the minimum for a unit used a few times a week.
- Your home changes the number: pets, cooking, dust and the hours each room runs all shorten the interval.
- Tie it to the calendar: months 3, 6, 9 and 12 make a quarterly schedule easy to remember.
In the video above, Uncle Eric answers one of the questions he is asked most often, explains how usage decides the schedule, and shares a simple trick for remembering when the next service is due.
Why does aircon servicing advice vary so much?
Advice online ranges from monthly to once every year or two. The reason is that a single number ignores how the aircon is actually used. A bedroom unit running every night in a flat next to a busy road gets dirty far faster than a study unit switched on a few afternoons a week. The answer depends on hours of use first, then on what is in the air around the unit.
How you use it | Service every |
|---|---|
Day and night: 10 hours a day or more, or close to 24/7 | 3 to 4 months |
Every night, rarely in the day | 3 to 4 months is a good guide |
Light use: a few nights a week, a spare room, a home office used occasionally | At least 6 months |
Uncle Eric uses his own aircon every night and often in the daytime too, so his units are on the 3-month schedule.
What makes a unit need servicing more often?
Factor | Pushes towards 3 months | Can stretch towards 6 months |
|---|---|---|
Hours of use | Every night, or long daytime use | A few times a week |
Room | Master bedroom, running all night | Spare room or study used occasionally |
Dust | Near busy roads, construction or renovation | Higher floors, windows kept shut |
Cooking | Living room unit near an open kitchen | No cooking near the unit |
Pets | Cats or dogs sleeping in the room | No pets |
Humidity and laundry | Laundry dried indoors, a damp room | Dry, well-ventilated room |
Singapore humidity is the constant behind all of this. The evaporator coil is wet every time the aircon runs, so the dust that sticks to it turns into a jelly-like biofilm, the drain pan collects it and the blower fan picks it up. A 3-month service clears it before it starts to block airflow or the drain.
How do I work out my own schedule?
- Count the hours. Estimate how many hours a day each aircon runs.
- Start from the table. Nightly or long daily use starts at 3 to 4 months; light use at 6 months.
- Adjust for your home. Move a unit towards 3 months for each factor from the list above that applies: pets, cooking, heavy dust or laundry drying nearby.
- Fix it to the calendar. Pick the months that match your interval (below) and set a repeating reminder on your phone.
- Book all units together. On a multi-split system, one visit covers every indoor unit and the shared outdoor unit.
Once you know your interval, book your next service for the first month on the list.
How can I remember when servicing is due?
Tie it to the calendar, as Uncle Eric suggests:
- Twice a year: June and December (months 6 and 12).
- Every 4 months: April, August and December (months 4, 8 and 12).
- Every 3 months: March, June, September and December (months 3, 6, 9 and 12).
Regular servicing also means you know your aircon's condition. If it has been serviced every few months and working fine, and then a major problem appears, you and the technician know straight away that something has changed, which makes the fault quicker to find.
Should I service all my units at the same time?
On a multi-split system (System 2, 3 or 4), all the indoor units share one outdoor unit. Servicing them together lets the technician check the outdoor unit once, compare how each room is cooling and spot a unit that is struggling. The master bedroom usually runs the longest, so it is often the dirtiest when we open it.
The outdoor unit is checked at every service but does not always need washing, depending on how much dust it collects on its ledge, rooftop or service yard. You can watch: when to clean the aircon outdoor condensing unit, and read about outdoor unit problems in Singapore homes.
What it costs
Job | Price | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
Premium servicing with PowerJet | S$80 for one unit | Unit type |
Outdoor unit wash, if needed | Quoted on site before washing | Access to the ledge or rooftop |
Our premium servicing uses PowerJet, our high-pressure jet wash, to deep-clean the evaporator coil, blower fan and drain pan, which helps a unit go longer before it needs anything deeper. If it still leaks, smells or cools poorly soon after a normal service, see chemical wash vs chemical overhaul.
When to call a technician
Book early, whatever the calendar says, if you notice:
- weaker cooling, or the room takes longer to cool
- a musty or stale smell (see why your aircon smells)
- water dripping from the indoor unit
- new rattling, buzzing or squealing
- ice on the pipes or the unit
- a higher electricity bill with no change in how you use it
Every service comes with a 90-day warranty. Book online in under a minute with instant confirmation, or ask Luna, our AI assistant, on WhatsApp any time.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I never service my aircon?
Dust and slime build up on the evaporator coil and blower fan, airflow drops and the unit works harder to cool the room. Sooner or later that shows up as weak cooling, a musty smell or water dripping, and a unit left too long may need a chemical wash or overhaul instead of a normal service.
Can I wash the filters myself instead of servicing?
Washing the air filter every few weeks is worth doing and helps between services. It does not clean the coil, blower fan, drain pan or drain pipe, which is where most leaks and smells start, so it does not replace servicing.
Is servicing too often bad for my aircon?
No. A properly done service does not wear the unit out. The only cost of servicing more often than you need is the service itself, which is why we match the schedule to how much you actually use the aircon.
My tenancy agreement mentions aircon servicing. What should I do?
Many tenancy agreements in Singapore include an aircon servicing clause, so check how often yours asks for it. Keep the service report from each visit, as it is your record that the servicing was done.
