Aircon sleep mode: what it does and when to use it

By Eric Lim, founder of iAircon.Repair · · 4 min read

What does aircon sleep mode do?

Sleep mode slowly raises the set temperature over the first hours after you switch it on, typically by about 1°C an hour for two hours, then holds it, usually with the fan on its quietest speed. It saves electricity and stops you waking up cold, though the exact steps vary by model.

Key takeaways

  • It works gradually: a room set to 25°C typically ends up around 27°C by the early hours.
  • It saves power: every degree higher means the compressor works less through the night.
  • It is quieter: the indoor fan usually drops to low for the whole programme.
  • Start moderate: a 24°C to 26°C starting point suits most Singapore bedrooms.

There is no video for this one, but Uncle Eric covers the remote settings people most often get wrong in watch: common mistakes on aircon remote settings.

How do I use sleep mode?

  1. Switch the aircon to cool mode at a moderate setting, such as 24°C to 26°C.
  2. Press the sleep button. It may be labelled Sleep, Comfort Sleep, Night or show a moon icon.
  3. Point the air flaps so the airflow does not blow directly onto the bed.
  4. Leave it on for the night. After about the first hour, the aircon raises the set temperature by around 1°C, then again after roughly another hour, and holds that level until morning.
  5. If the room feels warm or sticky by early morning, start a degree lower the next night.

Some models let you choose how much the temperature rises, others use a fixed setting, and a few switch off after a set number of hours. Check your manual or the remote's display to see what yours does.

Why use sleep mode instead of just keeping the aircon on?

Your body temperature drops naturally as you fall asleep, so the cool setting that helped you drift off is colder than you need at 3am. Keeping the aircon at that setting all night means the compressor works harder than necessary, and many people end up waking at dawn reaching for a thicker blanket.

Sleep mode handles this without you needing to wake up and adjust the remote:

  • Lower electricity use. On an inverter aircon, the compressor can slow right down once the room is at the higher set point.
  • Less chance of waking up cold. The gradual rise matches what your body needs through the night.
  • Quieter nights. The low fan speed is gentler for light sleepers, babies and anyone sensitive to airflow on their face.

Isn't the off-timer just as good?

The off-timer switches the aircon off completely after a set time. That saves more power, but in Singapore's heat and humidity a closed bedroom warms up quickly once the aircon stops. Many people wake up hot and sticky, switch it back on, and lose the saving. Sleep mode keeps the room comfortable all night while still trimming energy use, so for most bedrooms it is the better choice. If you prefer the timer, set it for the early morning rather than an hour after bedtime.

How is sleep mode different from eco, quiet and dry mode?

Mode

What it does

Best for

Sleep

Raises the set temperature gradually overnight, quietens the fan

Bedrooms at night, naps

Eco / Econo

Limits the power the aircon draws, all the time

Saving power when the room is not very hot

Quiet

Runs the indoor fan at its lowest speed

Study or bedroom when noise matters most

Dry

Focuses on removing moisture, with little cooling

Damp, mild days and rainy nights

Off-timer

Switches the aircon off after a set time

Short naps, cooler nights

The names vary between brands, and some remotes combine these features.

When should I not use sleep mode?

Sleep mode is fine for most homes, but adjust it if:

  • The room heats up quickly. West-facing or top-floor HDB bedrooms that hold heat late into the night may feel too warm. Start a degree lower, or add a ceiling fan on low.
  • It feels sticky on very humid nights. At a higher set temperature the aircon removes less moisture, so some rooms feel muggy. Starting a degree lower usually fixes this.
  • Someone at home needs a steady temperature, such as an elderly family member or a baby, and a doctor has advised a fixed setting.

Avoid starting very low, at 18°C or 20°C, because sleep mode only adds a degree or two and the room will still be cold by morning.

Why does my aircon struggle at night even on sleep mode?

If your aircon cannot hold even a moderate temperature overnight, or the fan is noisy on its lowest setting, the problem is usually not the mode. A blower fan and evaporator coil clogged with dust and mould move less air and cool less, so the unit runs harder all night. A deep clean with premium servicing with PowerJet usually restores quiet, low-speed running. Our guide on how often to service your aircon in Singapore explains how to judge the right interval, and if the room never gets cold at all, start with the most common reasons an aircon is not cold.

When to call a technician

Sleep mode should make your nights quieter and cooler, not worse. Call a technician if your aircon:

  • cannot keep the room cool overnight even at 24°C to 25°C
  • makes rattling, buzzing or clicking sounds at night (see what each aircon noise means)
  • drips water onto the bed or floor
  • gives off a musty smell when it starts
  • switches itself off or shows a blinking light during the night

Our aircon repair and troubleshooting covers these faults, with a repair warranty from 180 days (servicing carries 90 days). Book online in under a minute, or chat with Luna on WhatsApp any time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use sleep mode during the day?

Yes. Sleep mode simply follows its programme from the moment you switch it on, so it works for an afternoon nap too. Just remember the room will get slightly warmer over the first couple of hours, which may not suit a busy, sunny living room.

Does sleep mode damage the aircon?

No. Sleep mode only changes the set temperature and fan speed, which the aircon is designed to do. If anything, running at a gentler setting puts less strain on the compressor through the night.

Why does my aircon still feel too cold on sleep mode?

Sleep mode starts from whatever temperature you set. If you begin at 20°C, a rise of a degree or two still leaves the room cold by morning. Start from a more moderate setting, and make sure the fan is not blowing directly onto the bed.

Is sleep mode the same on Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Panasonic?

The idea is the same, but the name, button and exact steps differ between brands and even between models. Some let you choose the temperature rise and others use a fixed setting, so check the manual or the remote's display.

Does sleep mode work on a non-inverter aircon?

Yes. A non-inverter aircon still follows the higher set temperature, but it does so by switching its compressor on and off more often rather than slowing down. The saving is usually smaller than on an inverter model.
