Is a Mitsubishi Electric Starmex a good aircon to buy?
In our experience servicing and repairing them, Mitsubishi Electric's Starmex multi-split systems hold up well under long daily use, original spare parts are available through the brand's Singapore service centre, and they are straightforward to service. No brand is fault-free, so a good installation and regular servicing still matter more than the badge.
Key takeaways
- Proven under heavy use: a Starmex MXY3G28VA at Ashi Katong has run more than 12 hours a day since 2016.
- Local parts support: we sourced its original replacement PCB from Mitsubishi Electric's Singapore service centre.
- Familiar to service: Starmex is one of the systems we see most in HDB flats and condos.
- Installation still decides: sizing, piping and clearing air and moisture from the pipes matter as much as the brand.
In the video above, Uncle Eric installs a new Mitsubishi Electric Starmex system. What follows is not a sales pitch. It is what close to a decade of servicing, repairing and installing these units in Singapore has taught us.
What is a Mitsubishi Electric Starmex?
Starmex is Mitsubishi Electric's multi-split range in Singapore: one outdoor unit running two, three or four indoor units, the setup most people call System 2, System 3 or System 4. Because it is so common in homes, it is also one of the systems we know best.
How do we judge an aircon brand as technicians?
We do not judge a brand by its brochure. We judge it by what we see years later, on the job.
What we look at | What we see on Starmex | Our evidence |
|---|---|---|
Durability under heavy use | Long service life when maintained | Ashi Katong outdoor unit, 12+ hours a day since 2016 |
Parts supply | Original parts sourced locally | Power PCB ordered from the Singapore service centre |
Serviceability | Logical to dismantle, clean and refit | Regular servicing and chemical overhauls on Starmex units |
Common faults | Mostly dirt and installation related | Our own repair videos (see below) |
Why do Starmex systems last under heavy use?
The best evidence we have comes from Ashi Foot Reflexology. We look after 13 of their 15 outlets in Singapore, which run Starmex systems, and have done for years.
At their Katong branch, a Starmex MXY3G28VA outdoor unit installed in 2016 has run more than 12 hours a day, every day of the year. Its first major breakdown was a failed relay on the power PCB, which we replaced. For a unit worked that hard, in a shop that cannot afford downtime, that is a strong record. The full story is in our Starmex PCB replacement case study.
A home system runs far fewer hours than that. If a Starmex copes with commercial use, a well-maintained one in a bedroom has an easier life.
Can you get Starmex spare parts quickly in Singapore?
This matters more than most buyers realise. When a part fails, the aircon is only as good as the supply of replacements.
For the Ashi repair we ordered the exact original board from the Mitsubishi Electric Singapore Service Centre, so the repair was done once and done right. watch: at the Mitsubishi Electric Service Centre Singapore
Ask any brand about parts support before you buy.
Are Starmex units easy to service?
Yes, for a technician who knows them. We service, chemical wash and overhaul Starmex indoor units regularly, so we know how they come apart, where dirt collects in the evaporator coil and blower fan, and how they go back together cleanly. That familiarity means a quicker, more thorough job and fewer surprises.
Not every job is simple. Replacing a power PCB on a Starmex outdoor unit means removing the enclosure and the control board first, and it took Eric and Evan about three hours. But the design is logical, and the work is predictable when you have done it before.
Why does a multi-split suit Singapore homes?
Most HDB flats and condos have limited ledge space. A multi-split puts one outdoor unit there instead of one per room, which keeps the ledge tidier and makes servicing access simpler. Each room still has its own indoor unit and its own control.
The trade-off is that the rooms share one outdoor unit. If it fails, every room loses cooling at once. That is one more reason to choose a brand with good parts support and to keep the outdoor unit serviced.
What still goes wrong on Starmex systems?
An honest view has to include the faults too. The ones we fix most on Starmex units are:
- Not cooling because the coil and blower fan are clogged after years of use, usually solved by a thorough clean, with an overhaul as the last resort
- Water leaking from a dirty drain pan or blocked drain pipe
- Severe condensation, where the casing or pipes sweat and drip
- Board faults, such as the power PCB at Ashi
None of these is unique to Mitsubishi Electric. Most come down to cleaning and correct installation, whatever the brand. For how these parts fit together, see how an aircon works and where it goes wrong.
Does installation matter as much as the brand?
Often more. A good unit installed badly will underperform for its whole life. The points that matter most are correct sizing (BTU) for the room, neat and properly insulated piping, a correct drain pipe fall, and pumping all the air and moisture out of the pipes before the gas goes in. watch: professional evacuation on a Starmex

Frequently asked questions
Is Mitsubishi Electric the same company as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries?
No. Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries make separate aircon ranges with different models, parts and service networks. Starmex is a Mitsubishi Electric range, so check which one you are being quoted.
Can a Starmex outdoor unit be reused when I change the indoor units?
Sometimes, if the outdoor unit is healthy and the new indoor units are compatible with it. We check the outdoor unit's age, condition and model before advising, because pairing new indoor units with a worn outdoor unit is a false saving.
Do you service Starmex systems you did not install?
Yes. We service and repair Mitsubishi Electric Starmex systems whoever installed them, along with Daikin, Panasonic, Haier, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Hitachi and other brands.
How long does a Starmex system last?
There is no fixed figure; it depends on installation, hours of use and servicing. The Starmex outdoor unit at Ashi Katong has run more than 12 hours a day since 2016, and its first major breakdown was a power PCB fault we replaced.
Does a Starmex need servicing more or less often than other brands?
The same as any brand. How often to service depends on hours of use, dust, cooking and humidity in the room, not on the badge.
